Biography
Orchestral Conductor, Music Educator,Music Adjudicator, Conducting Lecturer, Composer
Robert's conducted performances have been comprised of a huge range of symphonic orchestral repertoire and a large range of vocal repertoire, regularly including performances with acclaimed national and international composers and soloists. He is known as much for his compelling conducting performances as for his highly dynamic repertoire programming and advocacy for works by contemporary and other Australian Composers.
He is currently Chief Conductor of the Australasian Orchestra, the Melbourne Lawyers’ Orchestra, and the Monash Medical Orchestra. As well as being the former Chief Conductor for Monash Chorale , Monash University Choral Society and the Dandenong Ranges Orchestra, he has also conducted several concerts for other ensembles such as the since Preston Symphony Orchestra (which he conducted almost all but 2 of their concerts from the beginning of 2017 to the very end of 2019) and the Nicholas Chamber Orchestra. Robert has lectured and tutored orchestral conducting at multiple tertiary institutions, Monash University and the University of Melbourne and regularly gives choral and orchestral workshops, as well as by the not for profit education group The Music Generation. He has also conducted and given master classes to various music groups and secondary schools. In 2021 he also became music adjudicator, having since adjudicated for both international and local music competitions. He is a commissioned symphonic composer, notably including the very well received compositions of Symphony No. 1 (“Symphony to an ANZAC”), Lex Overture and Conjured (the latter being a fantastical rhapsody for violin and orchestra).
Born and raised in Melbourne, Victoria, Robert's early professional arts career included musical theatre productions and orchestral violin commitments, with him then going on to study Classical voice (BMus) and theatre (BPA) at Monash University before specialising in orchestral conducting with an Honours year at Monash followed by a Master of Music degree (performance, conducting) at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music (the University of Melbourne). As well as giving performance opportunities to highly talented university and school-aged orchestral instrumentalists and soloists (such as Australian violinist Christian Li, who's first solo orchestral performance was with Robert and the Australasian Orchestra), Robert also nurtures and encourage music in young and mature people.
